Marijuana and PTSD

Jumping leaps and bounds, the marijuana industry has made significant progress in proving itself worthy. It has been able to find its way into society here in 2019 with some of the previous negative stigma fading into the distance.

Marijuana is used to treat a number of medical ailments.  Post-traumatic stress disorder is a serious potentially life-threatening condition that has proven to be eased with the use of marijuana.

Based upon slim available data, it’s estimated that 354 million adults suffer from PTSD globally. Figures that are closer to home, Canada and the USA both hover around 8% of their individual populations suffering from this disease.

What Is PTSD?

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a condition that can last months or even years after a given traumatic experience has been endured. It leaves the “emergency mode” button so to speak still triggered in the mind of the sufferer and can happen to anyone who has experienced a serious traumatic event in their life.

There are numerous symptoms one can endure such as night tremors and nightmares, hallucinations, anxiety, depression, reclusion, and many more.

Treatment includes psychotherapy and prescribed medications.

Recent research published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology (statistics from Canada’s 2012 community health survey) provided insight that people with PTSD who have not reported using marijuana within the past year were much more likely to have suicidal thoughts and experience depressive phases.

Due to current limited treatments for PTSD patients, many have sought out other remedies, such as marijuana for alleviation.

Within this study, there were 24,000 eligible participants; of that number 420 of them were clinically diagnosed with PTSD. Out of that 420, 106 of them said they used cannabis within the past year.

The findings continue to divulge that the others who were suffering from PTSD that did not use cannabis were about 7 times more likely to experience a major depressive episode and were a whopping 4.3 times more likely to have contemplated taking their own life!

Fight for the Right!

Former secretary of the US Department of Veterans Affairs, David Shulkin is on board in favor of the USA conducting clinical research regarding the therapeutic benefits of marijuana use for veterans with PTSD.

Turning a blind eye at the obvious and watching many suffer and die demonstrates neglect and carelessness. Shulkin states: “Ignoring the treatment options comes at the peril of service members.”

As of now, the American VA has declined support.

Ongoing research is needed with data on the books. The study conducted by Stephanie Lake, Thomas Kerr, Jane Buxton, Zach Walsh, Brandon Marshall, Evan Wood and M-J Milloy was a great step in the right direction and in conclusion ended their published study as such:

“This study provides preliminary epidemiological evidence that cannabis use may contribute to reducing the association between post-traumatic stress disorder and severe depressive and suicidal states. There is an emerging need for high-quality experimental investigation of the efficacy of cannabis/cannabinoids for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder.”
